BSAS DC3/C47 TP TURBINE AIRCRAFT VARIANTS:

BSAS DC3/C47-65ARTP [1424 SHP]

BSAS DC3/C47-6RTP [1424 SHP]

BSAS DC3/C47-67FTP [1600 SHP]

 

BSAS has three variations of the Turbine DC3 Aircraft Type, dependant on the Pratt & Whitney PT6A Gas Turbine Engines Installed on the Aircraft. The PT6A-67F variant provides an additional 2,200lbs relative hot & high take-off performance.

Modification Process of a BSAS DC3/C47:

EXISTING AIRFRAME INSPECTION & OVERHAUL:

Complete Airframe Inspection for corrosion, hidden damage, previous damage and repairs, in accordance with the requirements of Type Certificate A 669, for Civil Certification of ex-military aircraft, where applicable.
Service Bulletins, as per FAA and SA CAA requirements.

Complete overhaul of the airframe in accordance with approved Maintenance Schedules

Repair of defects identified during the inspection process, in accordance with the Douglas Structural Repair Manual, or SA CAA approved repair schemes where applicable

Overhaul or Certification of Life Limited components, on the existing airframe

Compliance with applicable Air Worthiness Directives as per FAA and SA CAA requirements

Compliance with applicable inspections, in accordance with the Douglas Supplemental Inspection Document, for DC3 aircraft

Compliance with applicable Douglas Aircraft Company Service Bulletins, as per FAA and SA CAA requirements

Removal of all redundant brackets, equipment, harnesses and plumbing

 

FUSELAGE MODIFICATION:

Install 40 inch fuselage extension

Install new battery boxes

Install new overhead panel assemblies in cockpit

Install modified heater duct outlet system

Install center wing, outer wing and fuselage re-enforcing

 

POWER PLANT MODIFICATION:

Install new Pratt & Whitney PT6A-65AR/67R/67F engines and accessories

Install new Hartzell 5 blade 111.2 inch diameter propellers

Install new engine mount assembly

Install new firewall and fire seal assemblies

Install new Main Fuel Tank

Install new engine cowling assemblies

Install new oil cooler assemblies

 

COCKPIT MODIFICATION:

Install new Overhead Circuit Breaker, Engine and Fuel Management Panels

Install new instrument panel with new instrumentation required by the conversion

Modify control pedestal and install new throttle quadrant for Turboprop power control

Install new control wheel switch assemblies for communication systems

Install stall warning system

Install Maximum Airspeed Warning System

 

FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM:

Install Stability Augmentation System

Balance Ailerons in accordance with the modification requirements, elevator and rudder balance as per Douglas Service Bulletin and Applicable Air Worthiness Directive

Extend all Flight Control cables by 40 inches

Adjust elevator trim travel as per modification definition

Install stall strips on center wing leading edge

 

DE-ICING EQUIPMENT:

Install new propeller deicing system.

Install new air intake lip de-icing system, and inertial separator doors in air intake duct

Install new pitot heat wiring and sensing system

 

FIRE DETECTION AND PROTECTION SYSTEM:

Install Engine Inconel wire loop fire detection system.

Install engine fire extinguisher system

Install cockpit and cabin hand fire extinguishers

 

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:

Install all new electrical wiring throughout the aircraft

Install two new 250 Ampere continuous output Starter/Generators

Install two new 24 Volt, 37 Ampere Hour Batteries

Install new nine Bus electrical system , consisting of:-

Two Main Battery Buses.

One Hot Battery Bus.

Two Left Generator Buses.

Two Right Generator Buses.

Two Avionics Buses.

 

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM:

Install two new Engine driven Hydraulic Pumps

Remove redundant hydraulic system components from the aircraft

Re-arrange and lower hydraulic component compartment in the cockpit, to provide a more spacious cockpit environment

 

FUEL SYSTEM:

Install one additional 120 gallon Main Fuel Tank in power plant each nacelle

Install four Electrically Driven Fuel Booster Pumps

Install four Electrically Driven Fuel Transfer Pumps

Install Capacitance Type Fuel quantity Transmitters and Indicators for all fuel tanks

Install Fuel Tank Interconnection Valve System

 

AVIONICS SYSTEM:

The Navigation and Communication systems, which are selected and installed as per clients specification, may vary considerably

As an example, on BSAS DC3/C47-65ARTP aircraft, which were modified by the South African Air Force, in accordance with the approved modifications, the following navigation and communication equipment was installed:-

Powerful PT6A Turbines provide for STOL [Short Take-Off & Landing] Capabilities. The tail drag configuration of the DC3/C47, combined with large, low pressure BF Goodrich tyres and high sitting engines, make for an aircraft that maintains high ground manoeuvrability in secluded airfields.
